A regular VIS or Seibon carbon fiber hood weights around 15-18 lbs. Some of them might weight a little more due to the size of the hood. One of the top reasons for changing a carbon fiber hood is to reduce the weight on the car. You can have a pretty good boost on the speed by reducing 40-50 lbs from the car's original hood.
Besides the performance upgrades, a carbon fiber hood also brings your car an unique look. Since the japanese brought up the ideas of carbon fiber hood, or we would say since the first original oem carbon fiber hood was introduced to USA, carbon fiber hood industry has under going a pretty big development. Now days, we are having regular carbon fiber hoods, dry carbon fiber hoods, titanium silver carbon fiber hoods, etc.
Once you purchase a carbon fiber hood, you are about to switch it with your stock hood. Remember the stock hood is pretty heavy, specially some SUV or bigger cars, more hands will be needed to install a carbon fiber hood. Once the stock hood is taken off, you will be able to take care of the light weight carbon fiber hood that you purchased.
First remove the windshield washers jet from your original hood on both sides, in order to do so, you need to unclip or unscrew the tubing. Some of the stock hoods have lights on them, take them off so you can use them on your new carbon fiber hoods. Prop the hood up once you remove the windshield washers jets. Some of the original hoods have gas shocks, so you need to remove them first, then remove the four bolts that holds the hood to the hingers. Get your helpers on both side of the hood when you remove the hinge bolts to prevent any damages to the hoods or windshield.
All right, with the hinges bolts are loose, you can pull it away from the windshield. Now you have taken the stock hood off. Lining up the bolts on the hinges and tightening them down, you have place the new carbon fiber hood onto your car. You can attach the gas stocks, hood prop, lights or any accessories that you have taken off previously.
With all the above done, close the hood carefully and see if the carbon fiber hood is balanced on both sides. Vis or Seibon Hoods are direct bolt on and perfect fit. If you see the hood is not balanced, which means there is a bigger cap along the line or you can't close the hood, just lift the hoods and loosen the hinge bolts carefully to make minor adjustments.
